The color gets all the attention, but the sheen is what you actually live with. It decides how a wall handles fingerprints, scuffs, steam, and cleaning — and whether every little drywall imperfection shows up in afternoon light.
Here is a plain-English guide to the common interior sheens and where each one belongs, room by room.
Flat & Matte
Flat and matte finishes have almost no shine, so they hide roller marks, patches, and uneven drywall better than anything else. That makes them ideal for ceilings, low-traffic adult bedrooms, and formal spaces. The trade-off is cleanability — older flats can burnish or mark when you scrub them, though modern "matte" lines are far more washable than they used to be.
Eggshell & Satin
This is the everyday workhorse for most living spaces. Eggshell has a soft, low glow; satin is a touch shinier and tougher. Both wipe down easily while still hiding minor wall flaws, which is why we use them for living rooms, hallways, dining rooms, and kids' bedrooms.
If you are not sure, eggshell on the walls is the safe default for most Sacramento homes. It looks refined, cleans well, and forgives the occasional bump or patch.
Semi-Gloss & Gloss
The higher the gloss, the tougher and more moisture-resistant the finish — and the more it highlights surface flaws. Reserve semi-gloss for the places that take abuse and moisture: trim, doors, baseboards, cabinets, and bathrooms. The slight sheen also crisps up trim lines against a flatter wall.
A quick room-by-room cheat sheet
Ceilings: flat, so seams and texture disappear.
Living areas & bedrooms: eggshell or satin for a clean, wipeable finish.
Kitchens & baths: satin or semi-gloss to shrug off steam and splatters.
Trim, doors & cabinets: semi-gloss for durability and a sharp look.
The bottom line
Match the sheen to how the room gets used, not just to the look you want. Get that right and your paint stays looking new for years instead of showing every scuff by month three.
